Imposition Detected. On Friday last two dashing young fellows made their appearance in this town, driving a horse and gig in the real "bang-up style." They appeared like gentlemen of leisure, attending the places of public resort, and, in the course of the day, made one or two attempts to trade in horses, but without success. In the afternoon, advertisements were received from New York, dated on Wednesday, offering a reward for a horse and gig which had been stolen, and which, it was supposed, was taken by a young person who was suspected to be a female in men's clothing. Suspicion immediately fell on the new comers, and, on examination, the horse and gig were found to correspond exactly with the description given in the advertisement. The "gentlemen" had taken a walk, but were soon discovered on the towpath bridge, viewing the arrival of a canal boat, and were arrested sans ceremonie. On being questioned they acknowledged that they were females in disguise. They, however, denied stealing the horse and gig, and said it was one they hired. They were ordered by a magistrate into the custody of the gaoler, until opportunity should be allowed to give information to the owner of the horse and gig, and to obtain such further testimony as should be necessary.
