Bids On Friday

Eight firms submitted bids for the renovation of the West Stand at Shaw Stadium, the bids being opened Monday, February 13th at the regular meeting of the Board of Education. Some discussion was held, but decision as to the award was deferred pending a study of the various bids.

The board adjourned to meet at 1:00 p. m. Friday at which time they expect to award the contract.

Bids received varied from $35,200 to $66,325, with a time element ranging from 105 to 200 days for completion of the contract.

The board accepted the tax rate set for the school district by the Budget Commission. It will be 16.3 mills against 16.9 mills the previous year. The rate is anticipated to return $1,631,956 on the new duplicate of $101,120,000.

Prior to the property revaluation made last year the duplicate for the East Cleveland School District was $93,200,000.

Of the $1,631,956 to be received, $82,098 is earmarked for debt retirement. The tax rate for this allocation dropped from .90 to .82 mills, due to a lowered indebtedness.

The board approved a bond of $15,000 for the clerk-treasurer, and bonds of $1,000 each for the three bus drivers.

President C. S. Stonebraker announced committee appointments as follows: Finance—Karl Brown, Richard Gottron; Business—Robert Henderson, Karl Brown; Education—Mrs. Mariem Morgan, Mr. Henderson; Welfare—Mr. Gottron, Mrs. Morgan.

The third new teacher to be employed for the 1956-57 school year approved, upon recommendation of Dr. O. J. Korb, superintendent. She is Miss Catherine Ayers, a Shaw High School graduate who is a senior at Allegheny College, Meadville, Ohio.

Upon the recommendation of Dr. L. L. Myers and his committee, the board approved the adoption of the textbook, "English in Action" by Tressler and Shelmadine. It's the revised edition of the book now in use in Kirk Junior High School.

The board acted to retain membership in the Ohio School Boards Association.

The following were chosen to attend professional meetings: John J. Jirus (Superior Elementary), president of East Cleveland Teachers Association; and Hugh G. Corlette (W. H. Kirk Jr. High School) to the Ohio Educational Association fifth annual conference, Columbus, Ohio, March 22-24.

Dr. L. L. Myers, principal Kirk Jr. High School, to the National Association of Secondary School Principals, Chicago, February 25-29th.

Dr. O. J. Korb, superintendent, to the American Association of School Administrators annual conference, Atlantic City, February 19-23rd.

Dr. Korb reported an increase of 147 pupils on the second Monday of the second semester, compared to a year ago. The comparison by grades is: Kindergarten 520 (506 a year ago), Grades 1-6 2570 (2530). Grades 7-12, 2221 (2130). Totals 5513 (5166).

Only two schools had a decrease. Chambers with five, and Superior with ten.

Gains were: Caledonia 43. Mayfair 17. Prospect 4. Rozelle 7, Kirk 27, Shaw 64.

Upon the recommendation of N. F. Leist, assistant to the superintendent, the board approved the turn in of a station wagon on a jeep. The jeep will speed snow clearance, said Mr. Leist, as well as be of service in other jobs.
