The Corky Doctor.
This Man Care Everything Proves a Low-down Bilk.
About one week since a well-dressed individual, calling himself Mons. A. Albert came to town. He is what the boys would call "a daisy." He opened wine, played poker, and seemed to be a regular "Coal Oil Tommy." As setting forth his aims and purposes in life, he caused the following advertisement to be inserted in the local press:
MONS. A. ALBERT!
Chiropodist Manicure -AND- Dermatologist de Paris!
REMOVES INSTANTLY, PERMANENTLY, the skin Superfluous Hair, Freckles, Moles, Pimples, Pock and Birth marks, Sallowness, Black Worms and Wrinkles. Eye-brows and Eye-lashes treated: Hair shampooed and prevented from falling out; Skin beautified; Hands made white; Finger-nails almond-shaped. "Sozzo, a preventative for excessive perspiration.
N. B. A Specialty-ALL AILMENTS OF THE FEET. Corns, Bunions and ingrowing nails instantly removed.
That is what he claimed he could do. Bunions and corns instantly removed Black worms and wrinkles eradicated in a twinkling! Confidence sharp is no name for him. Plain unvarnished bilk is nearer to the mark.
But his engagement in Eureka was of short duration. Two days ago he was called by a lady whom Dr. De La Matyr had been attending for some time. She was pitted from small-pox. Mons. Albert assured her that he could remove the pits in three days, and would do so for $120, $60 cash, and $60 when he had perfected a cure. The first installment was paid, and he applied a preparation to her face. Tuesday night the lady suffered great agony, and again called in Dr. De La Matyr. The Doctor learning the facts immediately summoned Mons. Albert and demanded the nature of the application. Mons. Albert got on his dignity, said it was a professional secret, and positively declined to impart it. Then the Doctor got angry and threatened to throw him from a window in the upper story of the Turner House.
This brought the chiropodist to a realizing sense of the situation, and he frankly owned up that the chief ingredient of the preparation was croton oil. He claimed, however, to be a full fledged physician, but when pressed to show his diploma he said that it had been lost.
The worst feature of the whole affair is that the unfortunate lady may lose one or both of her eyes, to say nothing of the loss of her money. Dr. De La Matyr took steps on Tuesday night to have the impostor arrested, but, the hour being late, he could not secure the necessary papers. Yesterday morning Mons. Albert lit out in a blaze of glory, closely pursued by a bevy of soiled doves from the lower levels, to whom he was indebted. One of his tormentors succeeded in getting in a left-hander, dislodging three teeth (false), which are held as trophies of the inglorious flight of the bilking bunion sharp.
Mons. Albert, in his haste, neglected to settle sundry bills, and yesterday a telegram was sent to officers along the railroad to arrest him. He was nabbed at Carlin, the officer at that point answering that he would hold him for 24 hours.
Deputy Constable Mooney goes down this morning to bring him up.
He will be tried on charges of obtaining money under false pretences, practicing medicine without a diploma, and for fleeing the State without paying his debts. Verily is the way of the transgressor hard.
