Ice In Red Hot Metal.—The most wonderful fact connected with ice making is the glorious experiment by which water was frozen in a capsule of platinum at a white heat. This wonderful achievement proceeds upon the theory that water will not touch a body of metal heated beyond a certain degree. A most important fact it is for all connected with steam producing, that it will assume in such a case a spheroidal shape, and that a clear space will be preserved between it and the glowing metal, owing, doubtless, to the repulsive effect of great heat in all cases whatever.
Professor Faraday has carried this marvel even a step further, and actually frozen a ball of mercury in the midst of a glowing furnace, by the judicious admixture of carbonic acid and ether, so as to give great vigor to the evaporating process.
