Melancholy Accident. On Thursday
afternoon, the Elizabethtown packet sloop
Swiftsure, on her way from this city.
was upset in a squall when near the
dock at that place, and immediately filled
with water. The vessel was towed
to the wharf as soon as possible, and a
hole cut in her bottom, but not in time
to save the lives of the persons in the
cabin. The bodies of Mr. Strangman,
of Westfield, N. J. and Miss Polly P.
Townley, (daughter of the late Mr. Ja-
cob Townley) of Elizabethtown, who
thus unfortunately perished were taken
out.
The crew of the vessel, and some of
the passengers were saved by holding
on to the rigging and sides, till relief was
afforded—but it is feared that some oth-
ers of the passengers were lost, as it is
said there were fifteen on board, and on-
ly eight have been accounted for.
