Charlotte Symphony Orchestra Opens 24th Season October 4

The first formal concert in the new Ovens Auditorium in Charlotte will be given on October 4 by the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra as it opens its twenty-fourth season.

For this special event, the orchestra, under the direction of James Christian Pfohl, will present Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in D Minor, with final chorus on Schiller's "Ode to Joy."

The quartet of soloists who have been engaged to appear with the orchestra are Ellen Faull, soprano; Eunice Alberts, contralto; John Druary, tenor, and Donald Gramm, bass-baritone, all of whom are particularly noted for their performances of the Beethoven Ninth Symphony, including engagements with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at the Berkshire Music Center.

The choruses which will participate in this work are members of the Covenant Presbyterian Church, Richard L. Peek, director; First Methodist Church, William B. Thomas, director; Myers Park Baptist Church, Harvey L. Woodruff, director, and the Myers Park Presbyterian Church, James Christian Pfohl, director, and Delbert Bowles, assistant director.

In addition to the Beethoven Ninth Symphony, the orchestra will present four additional concerts in its subscription series during the 1955-1956 season. Joseph Fuchs, the eminent violinist, will be guest artist on November 15.

On January 17 George Stegner, head of the piano department at Queens College, will appear with the orchestra. The fourth concert will feature Herta Glaz, Metropolitan mezzo-soprano, and the Queens College Choir under the direction of John A. Holliday.

Grant Johannesen, distinguished young American pianist, will bring the season to a close on March 20.

All concerts are scheduled for Tuesday evenings and are to be given in the Ovens Auditorium.

Tickets on a reserved basis for the entire season may be procured at the Symphony's office, located at 404-1/2 South Tryon Street. Special rates are available to all students.
