Mr. Gladstone, the Extraordinary Lord High Commissioner to the Ionian Islands, had arrived at his destination and commenced his labors. At a meeting of the Senate he delivered a speech, in which he stated that the object of his mission was not to inquire into the British Protectorate, but to examine in what way Great Britain may most honorably and amply discharge the obligations which, for purposes European and Ionian rather than British, she has contracted.
The President of the Senate, in response, expressed gratitude for the new proof of solicitude given by the British Government, and promised Mr. Gladstone every assistance in the attainment of his purpose.
