Huge fire brands floated on the high winds which swept the flames toward the water front, and it was with great difficulty the firemen, aided by the militia and by the garrison of Work Point barracks, kept the flames from sweeping a broad path to the water's edge. Many blazing embers were carried out over the water, endangering shipping, and several unprotected pleasure yachts caught fire and burned like floating beacons in the bay.
