Popularity of Montana turkeys in eastern markets justifies a considerable increase in production by Treasure state growers, Miss Harriette E. Cushman, extension poultry specialist at Montana State college, advises.
The 1939-1940 pool-marketed crop showed an increase of 281,441 pounds over the previous year's marketings, Miss Cushman said.
During the last season Montana turkey growers marketed 27 cars totaling 554,913 pounds through pools, or about half the normal crop produced in the state.
Miss Cushman said records of commercial producers show turkeys can be raised in Montana at a total net cost of 11 cents a pound. The lowest net price Montana growers have received in the last 10 years has been 16 cents a pound.
