Gov. Hampton and Attorney General Conner, of South Carolina, left New York for Columbia last week, having accomplished their mission and succeeded in obtaining a temporary loan of $100,000 to defray the present expenses of the State government and a few cases demanding immediate attention. The facts presented by them at once convinced New York capitalists that this South Carolina loan was a good investment and the money was all promised. Before leaving New York, however, it was discovered that there was no absolute need for this loan, such an unexpected amount having been paid in taxes to more than supply the wants of the State government. If the taxes be paid as freely at the November levy no call will be made for this loan.
