Full Text
The Anti-Revenue Party.
The people groan under taxation. A man cannot drink whisky, chew tobacco, smoke, or take snuff without paying tribute to the national treasury. This is internal taxation. The Democracy say the whole internal revenue system should be abolished. It is British—away with it. Then a man cannot drink tea, champagne, French brandy or Holland gin, or buy imported cloth or silks or laces for his own or his wife's and daughter's wear, but he must also pay tribute to the national treasury. This is external taxation. The Democracy say in effect that the whole tariff system should be abolished. It is building up monopoly. Away with that, too.
And as we have only the internal tax and the external tax, and as both are offensive to the Democracy, it follows that if the wicked Republicans could only be disposed of there would be no taxes to pay at all. It was the boast of a jolly Congressman not many years ago that he had never voted for a tax nor against an appropriation. This should be the platform of the modern Democracy. When they get power they will no doubt pay the expenses of the government out of their own pockets. Until then the old Ship of State will continue to go by taxation.
