High Bond Holds Arrested Woman

A Friday night altercation between two Negro women and the proprietor of a Pryor Street grocery store has aroused residents of the Georgia Avenue-Pryor Street area. One of the women, arrested on charges of "malicious mischief" and "assault and battery", was bound over to Fulton Criminal Court Saturday morning, after a hearing before Atlanta Recorder's Court Judge Robert Brooks. Her bond was set at $4,500.

The two women, Miss Jessie Mae Jenkins, 21, of 989 Washington Street, S. W., and Mrs. Dorothy Merritt, 23, of 892 Washington Street, S. W. reportedly went to the Farm Cut-Rate Grocery Store at the corner of Pryor Street and Georgia Avenue, and selected merchandise from the self-service shelves of the all-night store.

At the check-out counter, the women said the proprietor, Carl Moore, allegedly accused Miss Jenkins of trying to steal a can of salmon. During an exchange of words between the two, Moore allegedly struck the woman and she in turn allegedly picked up some empty drink bottles and began to throw them.

The brief exchange attracted a crowd of persons to the scene-- in a community which in the last two or three years has almost completely changed its racial complexion from white to Negro.

Citizens expressed concern over the report that the Negro women were arrested and taken to jail while the proprietor was only given a copy of charges to appear in court. Several eye-witnesses told the Atlanta Daily World that Negro officers first came to the scene. They were overheard to call for a "white" car to handle the interracial incident. The onlookers reportedly resented this "requirement". At the same time Negro Sergeant Howard Baugh, who out-ranked the white officers, also appeared.
