Annual Meeting of the State Society
of Engineers.
THE SESSIONS HAVE ENDED
And the Meeting Adjourned—New Officers
Elected for the Ensuing Year—Mr.
White Re-Elected President—The Mid-
summer Meeting to be Held at Point
Pleasant—Annual Meeting at Charles-
ton—Excursions and Banquet.
The final session of the first annual
meeting of the West Virginia Society
of Civil Engineers and Surveyors, was
held at the court house yesterday. The
session continued from 10 a. m. to
shortly after the noon hour. The at-
tendance of delegates was larger than
on the preceding day. In addition to
the discussion on papers, officers for the
ensuing year were elected.
"Monuments of Surveyors, their Lo-
catlon and Preservation," was the sub-
ject of an able paper by Mr. C. B.
Krebs, of Elk river. The paper was
read by another member as Mr. Krebs
found it impossible to be present. The
paper was of intense interest and ably
prepared. The discussion that followed
its reading was general and spirited.
The election of officers was the next
in order of business. There was a gen-
eral desire that Mr. A. L. White, of this
city, be continued in office. Mr. How-
ard, of Point Pleasant, moved a sus-
pension of the rules and the election
of the presiding officer unanimously.
Mr. White attempted to "get out of the
hole," but only got mixed when an-
other motion that the secretary, Mr.
William
Steenberger,
of
Point
Pleasant, also be re-elected
un-
animously, was put. Finally the
double motion carrying the re-election
of both gentlemen was put and carried
with a hurrah. For vice president, Mr.
W. H. Howard, of Point Pleasant, was
named and elected without dissent. Mr.
E. B. Franzheim, of Wheeling, was
elected second vice president and J. R.
Burley, of Moundsville, third vice pres-
ident.
Mr. Howard told eloquently of the
advantages of Point Pleasant as a
place of meeting for the organization.
His oratory was not without effect, as
the motion to hold the midsummer
meeting of the society in Point Pleas-
ant, prevailed. It was decided to hold
the next annual meeting at Charleston.
The executive committee reported fa-
vorably the following new members: H.
L. Benton, Sistersville; James H. Cis-
ey, Wheeling; E. L. Wiles, Benwood;
Herman L. Arbenz, associate member,
Wheeling; James Gilchrist, Wheeling;
M. F. Giesey, Wheeling; Russell L.
Morgan, Morgantown.
In the afternoon the society was tak-
en on a trip over the line of the Wheel-
ing Bridge and Terminal Railway, which
was greatly enjoyed by the visitors. Su-
perintendent Taussig, of the company,
had charge of the jaunt. At the con-
clusion of the trip on the Terminal the
visitors went out to Wheeling Park on
the Wheeling & Elm Grove road, es-
corted by General Manager H. E. Weis-
gerber, where several hours were pleas-
antly spent in bowling. The conclud-
ing event of the meeting was an in-
formal banquet at the Fort Henry club
last night.
At the evening session of the engi-
neers at the Fort Henry Club,
a resolution was introduced and
passed, commending
the efforts
of the Ohio Valley Improvement Asso-
clation for slack-water on the Ohio
river between Pittsburgh and Marietta
and advocating a free Monongahela
river. It was ordered that copies of the
resolution be sent to the six West Vir-
ginia representatives in Congress with
the request that they give the move-
ment their support.
