Our next Governor.
A committee appointed by the whigs of Caledonia County for the purpose of expressing their sentiments on the nomination of a successor to Gov. Williams, who declines another election have expressed their preference, in the last Caledonian, in favor of the nomination of the Hon. Erastus Fairbanks for our next Governor, and accompany that expression with the reasons of their preference. Those reasons, in substance, are, that in the northern part of the state it is the universal wish and expectation of the whigs that the name of Mr. Fairbanks be presented to the freemen of the State as one eminently worthy and entitled to the suffrages of the entire whig party of the state-that "all who have had occasion to transact business with him in his commercial relations, can but acknowledge him a man possessed of practical good sense, uncommon sagacity and cool, deliberate judgment; a man of determined perseverance, considerate, firm and inflexible in his devotion to Whig principles"-a man consistent and unwavering in his public and private professions-understanding the private wants and interests of communities and individuals as well as the welfare of the state a man who has devoted much time and a well established and extensive influence to the promotion of Whig principles in Vermont and our sister states, with untiring diligence and much success. These are the principle reasons assigned by the committee, consisting of Messrs. E. A. Cahoon, J. H. Delano, C. S. Dana. H. S. Barlett. and Mordecai Hale; and they might with the utmost propriety have added, Mr. Fairbanks is, in the best sense of the terms, a gentleman and a christian, and in all respects qualified for the office of Governor of the Whig state of Vermont.
