Another lot of those exciting and romantic liquor cases were under consideration in the Justice Court, yesterday. An old grey beaded woman, Mary M. O'Connors, was the first victim. She pleaded guilty to the case against her for selling and told a pitiable story about being compelled to sell a little of the ardent for the purpose of getting a living. In her statement she made some rather bitter remarks as to what liquor had done for her and her family. She was fined $20 and costs and sentenced to jail for ten days. She pleaded not guilty to the charge of keeping for sale and her case was continued to Friday in $100 bail.
Thomas Farrell's was the next case. He was tried on a complaint for selling, and another for keeping for sale. The location of the shop is on Groves street; the liquor in question, ale. He was convicted on both cases and given the usual sentences, from which he appealed.
Joseph Hill was then tried on two cases. His place is on River avenue. It was proven by the defence that the liquid sold for the low price of twelve cents per quart was hop beer, against the sale of which there is no law, and accordingly he was acquitted. Charles E. Gorman was counsel for the defence; S. A. Cooke, Jr., for the government.
Then there were three cases tried against John Cabeo. An attempt was made to prove that the alleged ale was nothing but hop beer. Although the case for the prosecution was rather weak, yet the Judge felt obliged to convict the respondent. He was given the usual sentences, but these were afterwards revoked and John was let off on payment of costs.
