Shades of Soapy Smith Appears In the States

SEATTLE. Dec. 14.—A Post-Intelligencer dispatch from Vancouver said the gun that killed Jessie Rose, stenographer of the brokerage firm of Davison and Wright, last Friday, killed Frank H. Reid, of Skagway, in the fight with Soapy Smith.

The gun belongs to A. C. Wright, partner in the firm. He kept it in a pocket on his automobile. It is believed Jessie Rose became despondent, stole the gun and suicided.

Soapy Smith shot Reid with a Winchester rifle and the above story is discredited here. There is a possibility the pistol mentioned in the above dispatch is the revolver with which Reid shot Soapy Smith.

There were two Wrights in Skagway at the time of the famous shooting and both were friends of Reid and there is a possibility one secured Reid's gun as a souvenir and it has been passed down to his relatives.
