The President's Message arrived here [Edgefield, S. C.] by express on Thursday at 10 o'clock. We have heard it read, but have not been able to procure a copy for publication. It is decidedly against the South on the great question that now agitates the Union. It recognizes the principle of the protecting system in the most odious shape. Our worst apprehensions are realized. The South must be true to itself. The Hercules in whom she trusted will not aid the wheel. We hope our Legislature will provide that this Republic take no harm. The message exhibits the finances of the country in a prosperous condition, and contains a recommendation of the mad and delusive project to divide the surplus revenue among the States, according to the ratio of representation—takes the side of Georgia in her Indian controversy, but exhibits much mawkish humanity about the Savages; recommends some changes in the organization of the Departments, &c. &c.
