Mad-Dogs.

The dog days seem to have commenced with a vim, for in various parts of the city more than twenty dogs were killed yesterday that exhibited rabid symptoms.

Officer Darby was called to the "Green Tree" saloon about 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon to kill some dogs, and upon his arrival there found and killed five that had just been bitten by a mad-dog, which the parties claimed to have shot fatally, though he had gone off down the bluff toward the river. The officer followed the bloody trail of the wounded dog for some distance, but failed to find him in the brush and undergrowth.

Later in the evening Officer Fulford was called upon to murder several other dogs in the Second ward, which he did.

The various sections of our city in which these occurrences took place are thoroughly roused, and it is quite time for others to be equally so, for all are alike exposed to the dangers of hydrophobia. That these dogs should be slaughtered and at once, the best interests of our community demand, and it is to be hoped that the officers will take prompt and decisive action in the premises. Nor let another day pass without effective action. A few hours' delay may result in the death of some good citizen, who is worth more to the community than all of the dogs in the state.

This situation demands the most prompt and rigorous action on the part of our officers. Enforce the law to-day and thereby protect the lives and property of our citizens.
