COLUMBUS, O. -- The Thornton Beauty Academy, Ohio's newest Negro enterprise, opened its doors to the public Sunday, and several hundred Ohio citizens who had journeyed from all parts of the state to attend the formal opening received a pleasant surprise.
Rumors that the new academy would be one of the finest in the state, preceded the opening by several months, however, few of those who attended visioned anything quite so complete and ultra-modern. There were scores who came to offer their best wishes and make a rapid inspection. Almost without exception they became so entranced with the beauty of the institution's interior decorations, the convenient appointments and the innumerable facilities for instruction that they remained for hours, toying with gadgets, asking questions and wandering from one class room to another.
The black and cream color scheme accentuated by indirect lighting that prevails throughout the academy brought repeated praise from the visitors. Equally in favor was the modernistic leather and chromium furniture with which each class room and the reception room is furnished.
Above all, however, that caught and held the interest of those who attended the opening was the complete equipment for teaching and practicing beauty culture that was on display throughout the institution. Every room harbored innumerable gadgets and machines with which students and instructors will work in the interests of m'lady.
The clinic, where the most advanced student will receive their clinical courses, features a point that appears to be one of the institution's keynotes; the ultimate in sanitation at all times and under all circumstances.
The founder and manager of the academy, Mrs. Emile Thornton, when interviewed amidst banks of flowers in the reception room, expressed her pleasure at the manner in which the new institution had been received by the public.
"It is gratifying indeed, to have so many people congratulate me on the beauty of the school," she said, "however, it is my sincere hope that the reputation of the school will be derived from the quality of the students who graduate from us rather than from the material furnishings of the school, and it is towards that end that we here at the academy will work."
