Imps Of John Barleycorn
Seen Jiggin' In Jersey Cider

South Jersey's famous nut brown
apple cider, a favorite beverage
in these parts since the Colonial
fathers took lessons in its use
from the Indians, has fallen into
ill repute.
For in every quaff and guzzle
there lurks the same brain-twisting
wallop that sent the redskins of
yore On the warpath and still sends
peaceable men into howling snaky
realms of the DT's.
Persons who buy the good old
draught in these modern days no
longer drink it as nature intended,
according to Mrs. Nina G. Frantz,
president of the W. C. T. U. of
New Jersey.
Instead, they take it home, Mrs.
Frantz says, and they do things
with it until the imps of Old John
Barleycorn simper in the nut brown
depths.
"The transportation or possession
of apple cider," Mrs. Frantz declares,
"should be considered a
violation of the Volstead act and
the offenders should be dealt with
in the same manner that boot-
leggers are dealt with.
Cider Charged With Kick
"Cider after it is more than
three or four weeks old, contains
more than one-half of one percent
alcohol.
"Why, then, should it not be
placed in the same class as beer
and wine?
"People who buy cider very sel-
dom drink it as it is sold to them.
In some manner they ferment it
and make an intoxicating drink.
The W. C. T. U. will not recognize
or advocate the sale of cider. The
beverage is sold throughout the
country by owners of refreshment
stands, and this tends to educate
the appetite of the public for
strong drink."
