Full Text

A writer in the United States Gazette, ignorant of the character of Mr. Madison, or wilfully misrepresenting it, charges him with hypocrisy in returning thanks to the Almighty for the prevalence of religion in our country, and calls him a deist and an atheist. We do not wonder that so many honest men entertain a bad opinion of the President, when his reputation is thus assailed by scribblers who know nothing of him, and who invent and publish the most gross and disgusting falsehoods respecting him. The pious principles and disposition of Mr. Madison are known to every man acquainted with him; but it were vain to notice the scandal daily published against that illustrious citizen; the opposition prints have neither the candor nor the honor to undeceive their readers when they have once deluded them by misrepresentation—Whig.
