Shocking Accident at Newport.
John Kiefer, one of the best known ice dealers in Newport, whose residence is at the head of Monmouth street, that city, met with a horrible and perhaps fatal accident this morning.
Mr. Kiefer drove to the Pendleton Distillery, as has been his daily custom, to get slop for his hogs. Surrounding the large vat or tub that contains the slop is a platform, and while Kiefer was in the act of dipping out the swill the platform gave way, precipitating the unfortunate man head foremost into the boiling vat, where he remained fully five minutes before help reached him.
When taken out the skin dropped from his hips up, and the scalp actually fell from his head. A blanket was wrapped around the almost lifeless man and then he was taken to his home. Dr. Jeancon was called in and rendered all the assistance possible, but at 12 o'clock Kiefer was growing worse and his physician had no hope of his recovery.
