Intellectual Dishonesty
ONE OF THE things which may weaken America to a point of no return is intellectual dishonesty, or plain lying in the face of facts to the contrary.
OFFICIALS AT THE University of Georgia and among the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia might take note. The show at Athens, according to many qualified observers, was one of considerable sidestepping and evasions of straightforward facing of the fact that Atlanta students Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter were denied admission on the basis of race and color. Regardless of the ruling, - and the courts will finally adjudicate the justice or injustice of Negro admissions at the state university - racial favoritism appears certainly to have been practiced there.
Intellectual dishonesty on the part of officials, no matter how highly placed, cannot destroy the facts in and around the university admissions case. These little viruses do much more than halt the full development of a brown-skinned brain, or hands, They also warp the total thinking of white boys and girls, who assumedly are trying to learn how to get light out of darkness, and right out of wrong.
In a color-conscious world, where persons without skin pigmentation are slowly but surely learning that others are their brothers in human dignity, it is going to be increasingly hard for the prejudiced and intolerant to get along, or to remain adjusted under looming conditions of equality.
It is a strange paradox that while even the most die-hard racists concede that changes must come in the future, they make it harder for their offspring to meet this change intelligently and happily. They conveniently throw cinders into the oil which would allow the overall machinery to operate without friction, heat and general inefficiency - damaging even the principal machine itself.
They work against themselves and their children's future. They are being intellectually dishonest to their civilization, built on the achievements and failures, the hopes and aspirations of hundreds of years of living. It is a strange stupidity, to put it rather bluntly but frankly!
