PROVIDENCE MANDATE OF ELECTORATE But Wednesday morning Smith had resumed the job by virtue of having been given a mandate by the entire electorate in which he was born in Memphis, Tenn. and worked his way through college Fisk University and Catholic University is school to buy the next book and to make the next tuition payment. He worked on an assembly production line in Flint, Mich. education also was interrupted by service in the Army Signal Corps during World War II. WORKED AS LAW CLERK He worked as a law clerk for several federal agencies and returned to Flint to own a law firm. He was defeated in non-partisan race for Flint Board of Education and a municipal judgeship. But Smith's civic accomplishments brought him honors as Flint's outstanding young man of the year in 1956. ULCERS AT 20 He has another drive that brought him ulcers at the age of 20 and the tension of the NAACP chairmanship forced him to go under a doctor's care. Smith's appointment as auditor general was generally approved by Democrats. The Republican controlled Senate confirmed him in the post without a murmur. Senator Frank D. Beadle (R-St. Clair), majority leader, gave Smith the supreme Republican accolade as the Senate prepared to vote.
