Juneau Rotary Club today in a close election, selected a new board of directors for the coming year. From a ticket of 12 nominees, Bob Akervick, Homer Garvin, Stan Grummett, Hank Harmon, Joe McLean and Ellis Reynolds took the six executive spots.
Old and new boards of directors will meet some few evening at 7:30 in the Memorial Museum, announced President Ed Keithahn.
At the meeting the new officers for the coming year will be elected by the new board members.
The program at today's luncheon meeting was a color and sound motion picture issued by the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, "The Crucible of Speed." The film told the story of the Indianapolis Speedway 500 mile classic race, from pictures of the first winning car and its driver (1911) through to complete action shots of the 1946 race.
For the good of the community, Rotarian Bob Akervick told the club members of the forthcoming recital to be given by Miss Lois Hared, presented by Mrs. Maurine Moore MacKinnon. Miss Hared's program will be next Tuesday evening, April 29, at the Northern Light Presbyterian Church.
The young singing student, said Akervick, "really has talent and is very good." He urged all Rotarians to attend the recital, which will be free, and to take their families and friends.
Three guests attended the luncheon today. They were Dr. Edith Sappington, U. S. Children's Bureau consultant from San Francisco; Henry Farrington, Juneau-Minville representative from Seattle and D. H. E. MacLean, new agent for Canadian Pacific Steamship Company in Juneau.
The three guests each made brief comments, while the election votes were being counted. Said Mr. MacLean, "My impression of Juneau has been effected by the many hearty handshakes I have received, a real example of hospitality and friendship."
Mr. Farrington told how he made regular trips to Alaska in his business for 20 years until the war began. This is his first visit since the war, and he commented, "I am happy to have started in once more."
Dr. Sappington, who also is an annual visitor to the Territory, said "Alaska is to be congratulated on its growing health program." She commented on the recent opening of the Crippled Children's Hospital at Sitka, on the generous budget allowed by the recent Legislature, and on the successful activities being carried out by the Motorship Hygiene.
