Full Text

LITCHFIELD, May 11.

Sunday morning e'en night, about four o'clock, several families in town were alarmed, not with the professional cry of--sweep chimney sweep,--like a genuine one of the British and scraper--but of murder, attended with piercing groans; and had not the luckless midnight vesper been discovered, the solemn dirge proceeded from his hidden retreat might have been more panic-striking than the croaking of frogs at Windham.--Right happy are we, contemplating the recent bustle of Haxklnsack ghost, that supernatural conjectures had no chance to inflate the imagination; for upon examining the chimney of a store lately improved by Mr. Adams, a lily-white gentleman was found compressed; who must inevitably have died, had not part of the chimney been taken down to relieve him. In attempting to descend, by help of a rope, his feet probably slipped, and being thus precipitated down chimney, which was very contracted, stuck fast.--Inveloped in soot--in sable mantle clad--his first appearance exhibited an unaccountable phenomenon indeed to himself he was unaccountable; for he pretended not to know where he was, from whence he came, or what he was after.--It was assuredly only an innocent adventure; perhaps he had no other intention than experiment; and could he have succeeded in his entire new plan of entering chimnies a-top, expected by a privilege of exclusive right to have engrossed the business of chimney-sweeping.--He is committed for trial at the next supreme court; 'till the session of which, William Little cannot resume the broom.
