REBELS OCCUPY
TWO MORE CITIES

Shanghai, Oct. 24.--The occupation by revolutionists of two more important southern cities, Changsha and Nanchang, was announced in dispatch reaching this city.

Changsha is the capital of the province of Hunan, and Nanchang is the capital of the province of Kiangsi. Their capture delivers into revolutionary hands the local governments of two important provinces, thereby more than doubling the territory in which the rebels are masters.

Changsha, with 300,000 population, is the chief commercial center of the railroad between Hankow and Canton. It is the seat of Yali college, the Chinese extension of Yale university. Changsha is 200 miles southwest of Hankow, while Nanchang, with 100,000 population, is correspondingly situated 200 miles southwest of Hankow.

Fall Had Been Expected.

The fall of Changsha and Nanchang had been rumored here for a day or two. Late advances definitely confirm that both cities are entirely in the hands of the revolutionaries.

Four of China's eighteen provinces are now regarded as under revolutionary influence--Szechun, where the movement started; Hupeh, of which Wuchang is the capital; Hunan and Kiangsi.

The fall of Nanking, where the garrison is regarded as siding with the revolutionaries, would deliver to them the viceroyal government of two more provinces, Kiangsu and Nganhwei.

The entire Yangtse valley is gradually succumbing to the revolutionary infection.

No uprising has yet been reported at Nanking, which is only 200 miles above Shanghai, but there is every reason to believe that the garrison there cannot be relied upon by the imperial government.

The situation here is regarded as most alarming.
