THE BONANZA TAXES.
Referring editorially to the payment of their delinquent taxes by the Bonanza firm, the Virginia Chronicle of last evening says:
The attorneys for the Bonanza Mining Companies-the Con. Virginia and California this morning appeared in the District Court and announced that, because of the extreme financial depression prevailing at this time and the sufferings of the community at large, the companies they represented, though feeling that they had a good legal defense against the suits pending for the collection of the bullion taxes assessed against them, were not disposed to push their rights further, especially because of the hardships that would thereby be entailed upon the community. They were, therefore, willing to confess judgment for the gross amount of all their delinquent taxes, but not for the penalties charged against them because of such delinquencies. The attorneys for the people assented to this proposition and the judgments, amounting in the aggregate to $302,000, were entered accordingly. This afternoon the money was paid into Court and satisfaction of these judgments was formally entered. Thus the companies pay the total amount of all taxes assessed against them up to this date, and all legal costs incurred in the litigation resulting from the refusal to pay, but do not pay the penalty the statutes authorize for delinquency. In consideration of the payment of the money without further resistance, and in further consideration of the fact that the Nevada Bank, owned by defendants, has cashed all county warrants at par, pending the delinquency of these taxes, and thus prevented any actual suffering by creditors of the county, it is understood that the penalty for delinquency will not be pushed, though there is no stipulation to that effect, the claim for such delinquency merely being withdrawn from the complaints in the pending cases. Of the money realized by this payment, the State and county will receive $290,275 98; the remainder, between $11,000 and $12,000, representing the costs.
