Full Text
We are happy to hear that Mrs. Siddons is recovered from the severe indisposition under which she has long labored. It was a most acute rheumatism in her limbs, particularly the right side, and the pain was so excessive that she was compelled to swallow vast quantities of opium, in order to obtain temporary relief. She was unable to walk, and indeed was confined to her bed, extremely debilitated both by pain and by the medicine she was forced to take to benumb her sensations. Every application usually employed in cases of rheumatism was resorted to in vain. At last she was advised to try the effects of electricity, and she accordingly put herself under the care of Mr. Lowndes, of St. Paul's church yard, whose mode of directing this powerful agent has already performed many surprising cures. From this remedy, which it was necessary to apply with great force, the happiest consequences were soon experienced, and Mr. Lowndes has had the satisfaction of working a perfect cure. In a week she had given up the use of opium, by the excessive quantities of which her frame was much shattered, and she has now recovered the use of her limbs, and can walk as well as usual. She is not only restored to the enjoyment of friends and society, but we hope she will soon be able again to delight the public with the display of her admirable talents on the stage.
