Though the following Ode has appeared once before, yet some incorrectness of the Typography suggests the propriety of its being republished.
ODE,
Written on the occasion of laying the Corner Stone of St. Alban's Lodge, at Bristol, September 19, 1804.
LOSE refreshment, hate to LABOUR,-
Let the ROYAL work go on;-
From the marble mines of TABOR,
Brethren, let the CORNER STONE
Wisdom join'd with skill Sidonian,
To the younger Craft be given,
And the GRACE--beyond IONIAN,
Build the glowing FANE to heav'n.
STRENGTH, in Tuscan grandeur heaving,
Bid the BASALT COLUMN stand,
Above device and low deceiving,-
MOVeless BULWARK of the land.
BEAUTY, lov'd in Attic sweetness,
CLOTHE the ARCHITECT and SONG,
Who festoon'd in gay discreetness,
SHINE the Glory of the age.
SILENT RECORD, live secure,
Bright as the moon beneath th' ARCTURUS
TOWER;
The Runic pledge for worlds to come,
AFROSSIL mov'd but with the rending tomb.
Bear me ABIF'S Line and square,
PLACE the work ERECT and FAIR;
Now the TEMPLE is begun,
TRUE AND TRUSTY CORNER-STONE.
Th' OMMERS charge our souls Shall nourish,
Though a HANDWRUPT from the field,
By the TYRIAN God we'll flourish,
Till th' arraigning LIP is seal'd.
Pour the WINE's devout oblation,
CHEERING as the mystic ARK,-
'Tis the quick'ning PRELIBATION,
SHED in every RE-BORN heart.
Press the OLIVE on our sorrows,
GREET the joy-anointing juice;--
Who a wither'd harvest borrows,
Near Sarepta's wasteless crust?
SALEM'S KING be our conductor.
REAR and BLESS the SUPERSTRUCTURE;--
NATURE rose at thy command:-
MUSICK, strike the thrilling wire,-
STRAINS like these shall melt the lyre,
Mount Hope YIELDS not TO MORIAH
WHILE ST. ALBAN'S PILLARS STAND.
* A kind of marble always found standing upright.
+ The medal inscribed with the year of MASONRY and the date of the LODGE.
I Herculanean inscriptions.
$ Perish expression for "seeks" more consonant with the antiquity of masonry.
