POLITICAL RELIGIOUS
Combination against the Freedom:
and happiness of Mankind;
A continuation of Extracts from an Epistolary Correspondence in manuscript] on
the Republican System of Government.
Honorius to Aspasio.
IT is a fact incontrovertible, and now
well understood, that the pretended Fe-
deralists, the men of steady habits, the self-
titled friends of order and good Govern-
ment, the leaders of a faction that grew
out of the American Revolution, have, in
conjunction with the falsely called great of
other nations, been assiduously essaying to
establish both Civil and Religious tyranny,
on the ruins of all that is truly great and ex-
cellent,—the wise and philanthropic Con-
stitution of our Government; flattering
themselves with the fallacious hope, that
Monarchy and Priestly tyranny would soon be
enthroned in this country, with a magnifi-
cence and splendor superior to any by which
they have been distinguished in other coun-
tries, and former ages. The character of
those aspiring men has ever been the
same, from the haughty tyrant of ancient
Babylon to the PRESENT ERA;—"precisely the same combination of error," self-
ishness, "deceit, hostility to the true inter-
ets of man, persecution and cruelty." The
Ex-President, apostatizing from his former
professed principles, appeared deeply to have
imbibed the same spirit of pride, ambition
and contempt of the People, by which they
have always been influenced. His cruel de-
sertertion of the cause of this country, and his
artifices to inspire in its Citizens contempt
for Republicanism, must be ever had in re-
sentful remembrance; and I believe it to
be the opinion of Republicans throughout
the States, that the all-important interests
of the People demand, that his conduct,
while Chief Magistrate, and some time be-
fore that ill-fated period, be enquired into
from whence a lesson of instruction may be
administered to Americans, and to the world
—That the motives of the proceedings of
the late Administration, which have been
productive of so much confusion and mis-
chief, be fully laid open to the Public view.
None but such as are interested in the pre-
valency of imposition, can be opposed to
this enquiry; that if there may yet be hid-
den things of darkness, they may be brought
to light. It appears sufficiently evident, not
only that the plan was laid, and operating
to overthrow Republican Government; but
that it so far succeeded in effecting a revo-
lution in favour of the principles opposed to
it, as to require a NEW ONE to wrest our
Country from the merciless hands of oppre-
sion and violence. Let truth be clearly
manifested with regard to the late systems
that the blame and the guilt may be forever
fixed where they belong; that the deceiv-
ers may be distinguished from the deceived.
and the minds of Citizens be conciliated on
the truest grounds. The Public odium
Should attach to those who have justly merit-
ed it by their wild and extravagant systems,
[if systems they may with any propriety be
called, which were framed and conducted
with so little judgment or consistency.] The
period of time, on which those self-applaud-
ing politicians began their work, and the
Country on which their plans were to be ex-
ecuted, show their wildness and absurdity:
as though they had only to deal with an ig-
norant, spiritless People, easily to be prac-
tised on by knavery dressed in splendor, and
concealed by weak artifice. The effects of
their ambition and oppressive measures have
indeed been severely felt: We have been
chastised by Divine Providence; we have
been instructed; and the past reign of mad-
ness and terror will serve to enhance to us
the value of the blessings we now enjoy, and
render us more attentive and watchful.
Thanks to HEAVEN, and to the men, who,
under Heaven's direction, have availed, by
their wisdom and prudence, zeal and perse-
verance, to retrieve the nearly lost honor of
our Country, and restore to Republicanism
the respectability which becomes it It has
been ever the unhappiness of our world.
that the generality of men of genius, wealth
and influence, have joined in a confederacy
against the weak, the poor and ignorant
and this under pretence of zeal for virtue,
religion and good government. Some how-
ever have been found, in all the nations, better
disposed. But a more illustrious number
of wise, patriotic and benevolent Men never
existed, in any age or country than do now
in this; men who, abhorring a haughty in-
sulting spirit, advocate and support the cause
of the People, of Liberty, Truth & Virtue:
The Ex-President professed indeed a high
regard for virtue, religion and the happine
of society. But what are mere professions
and what have they effected?—This have
turned out to be a high regard for the old ar-
bitrary establishments, which have so long in-
toxicated, subdued and enslaved mankind—
for advancing over the People a species of
men inflated by pride and ambition, and
swelled with self-importance; men of
genius without true genius, meanly great,
as principally regarding the aggrandizement
of their own families. He pleased himself
with the prospect of a millennium suited to
his own taste; a religious reign, in which
himself and his family were to make the
principal figures. But as a kingdom divided
against itself cannot stand, so it happened
to Mr. Adams' grandeur—a misunderstand-
ing between him and his imagined chief ad-
herents, was happily the means of unfolding
the dark designs of Monarchists and Aristo-
crats, those friends and lovers of order. The
councils of the Athenians were turned into foolishness. The well-being of the millions of America was too precious, in the Divine estimation, to be left to the mercy of the confederates in wickedness. Could Mr. Adams, in his heart believe, that the principles on which he acted were consonant with virtue, honor or religion; or, that the English mixed government, that medley of absurdity, was preferable to American Republicanism? Can any thing better be said for him, than that he was ensnared by worldly grandeur, blinded by ambition, and swayed by the vain hopes and cowardly fears that attend it? These led him to those measures which blasted his fame, and degraded him from the respectability he formerly possessed. Such is the end of apostates from the generous principles of Liberty—such be ever the fate of the plotters against the freedom and happiness of man!

The reign of political phrenzy is past, and reason, virtue and philanthropy have the ascendancy in the councils of our nation. Happy exchange! The sublime and divinely inspired genius of JEFFERSON presides, and an illustrious assembly of Patriots and Legislators, to whom the People have committed their public concerns. The great, of nature's forming, take the lead in society, while falsely assumed grandeur shrinks into contemptible insignificance. The cry of War and false Religion dies away, and the gentle alluring voice of Peace and Love harmonizes every breast. The systems, fabricated by pride, ambition and avarice, give place to those which virtue and philanthropy alone inspire. Genuine Heaven born Religion disperses the mists of error and delusion; freeing the mind from spiritual bondage. The iniquitous combination of Church and State is every where dissolving; the total extirpation of priestly tyranny is rapidly hastening on. The wise and virtuous examples of Americans, founded on experience of past ages, and Heavenly tuition, extend their salutary influences through every clime.

What a wide difference. As Pasio. fub. Gts between the characters, the sentiments and conduct of the present and the late leading men of our Country! What new and delightful scenes of national happiness open to our view! The power of false Federalism to deceive is gone forever. Those who were led by the deceivers are daily forsaking their standard: Convinced of the wisdom, patriotism and honour of our PRESIDENT and HIS FRIENDS, they turn to them, and say—We will go with you; for we have seen that God is with you. And truly AsPas IO, their deeds are gloriously made manifest that they are wrought in God.

Tis the supreme intelligence, the source of wisdom and goodness, which influences the hearts of men, which inspires true genius, and a thirst for that glory which consists in DOING GOOD, in integrity and uprightness of heart. and the ceaseless exertion of every mental power in those works and labours of love, through which the sum of human felicity is daily increased.—Long may the illustrious worthies of our nation continue its ornament and delight! It is the fervent wish and prayer of millions of happy Americans; as it is likewise of your
