A Poor Soldier's Letter. The following letter addressed to us by the writer, is indorsed on the outside B. Walmsley, Captain of the 50th British Regiment:—
Up Park Camp, January 3, 1839
Kind Sir—I hope you will excuse the freedom of my writing these few lines to you, as I know of no one else that could answer my purpose but you. I was obliged to take this freedom of writing to you, and I hope you will excuse me for so doing. I have a brother in New York that I wish very much to find out, and if you would be so kind as to advertise him in your newspaper, I have not the least doubt but you will find out his address, and he will pay you all expenses of the advertisement. His name is George Douglas, and is a native of Hammersmith, Middlesex, England. If you will be so kind and oblige me so far as to let him know that I want to hear from him very particularly, you will much oblige
Your humble servant,
JOHN DOUGLAS
Please to tell him to direct to John Douglas, Private, 50th Reg't., Up Park Camp, Jamaica, West Indies.
This is a specimen of the strange kind of popularity we possess, almost over the civilized world—a popularity getting, however, to be rather expensive in the amount of postages. If any poor woman, or poor soldier, or poor sailor has any difficulty, he or she immediately writes us as the person that can remove all kinds of misfortune. By and by, I suppose, we will be requested as a favor to raise the dead, or restore health to the sick—but these and all such I must peremptorily refuse. There is a limit to everything.
