The city council at its Friday night meeting transacted considerable important business, such as adopting an ordinance imposing a tax on trading stamp concerns, granting building permits, acting on petitions for sidewalks and allowing bills.
Attending the meeting were Councilmen Connell, Tierney, Ernst, Robbins, Johnson, Patton and Boehm and the mayor acted in a dual capacity in the absence of the city clerk.
The reading of the minutes of the previous meeting was suspended.
An ordinance imposing a license tax yearly on concerns selling trading stamps to merchants here was adopted, to become effective July 1. A motion to reduce the amount of the tax to $400 was defeated.
The street committee recommended that the petition of the county court for a franchise for a pipe line running from the Haymond Heights gas well to the court house be rejected. This was done.
City Attorney M. G. Sperry advised the council not to undertake to abate a certain shack near the intersection of Monticello avenue and Thompson street as a nuisance, as it is without power, and suggested that if the occupants were disorderly the matter be taken up by the police department and if the place is unsanitary the same be looked into by the sanitation department. Mayor Moore informed the council that the city had rid itself of the Foggs who resided there. They packed bag and baggage and hied themselves to Greene county, Pa., big and little Foggs and all.
Bills were allowed as follows with the understanding that the street pay roll would be made up Saturday and passed on at Monday night's meeting of the council.

F. K. Dawson's petition for a brick sidewalk at 179 Hickman street was referred to the street committee for a report Monday night.
Petitions of W. B. Maxwell and the Palace Furniture and Piano Company for permission to build stairways leading from the street into the basements of the buildings they are about to build were referred to the Street committee for written reports Monday night.
Two members of a committee appointed last year to adjust a claim Mrs. Alice M. Gardiner has against the city having retired from the council, Councilmen Tierney and Ernst were added with Councilman Robbins as the holdover and the committee was requested to have a report by the next regular meeting of the council, if not Monday night.
Report having been made that a sidewalk between Jackson and Popular street had been relaid on private property, Street Superintendent Doyle was directed to report on the matter Monday night.
Councilman Johnson appearing for the Civic Club asked that the club be relieved from the payment of $30 its promised half of the expenses of Clean-up Day, but being informed that the club had paid the amount, Mr. Johnson stated that he would hold up the matter until a future time that he might be further advised.
Mrs. Louis A. Carr and others petitioned for permission to lay a cement sidewalk on Maple avenue, the excess over the cost of a brick pavement to be paid by the petitioners. The petition was granted.
The Morris Grocery Company other firms and individuals petitioned the council to pave Clark street in Glen Elk between North Fifth and North Sixth streets and also North Sixth street from Clark to Baltimore street. The petition was referred to the street committee.
Many citizens in a petition for relief called the attention of the council to the bad condition of the south end of South Chestnut street caused by laying water lines. The petition was referred to the street committee to confer with the water and sewerage board.
Morgan Parsons, L. W. Campbell and John Acheson petitioned council to take such action as would eliminate the stable or the use of a building as a stable in the rear of the Anex hotel and the residences of Messrs. Parsons and Campbell. No action was taken by the council.
Building permits were granted as follows:
Mrs. Martha Delson, stable at rear, Hewes street.
W. E. Tate, one two-story frame residence, corner Elm street and South Carr avenue, cost $1,800.
Palace Furniture and Piano Company, one five-story brick business block, West Main street, cost $40,000.
W. B. Maxwell et al, one four-story brick business house, West Main street, cost $50,000.
Morgan Parsons, one five-story brick hotel building, corner Fifth and Clark streets and also basement under building there now and addition of four stories, to form the five-story building.
Adjournment was taken until Monday night at 8 o'clock, when liquor applications will be acted on.
