Full Text
Suppose an election had occurred in Texas where the Democratic majority, usually 100,000, under similar conditions with which the election in Pennsylvania occurred, and that the majority had increased to 150,000 because the Republicans were not paid by the carpet-baggers or forced by the mill owners, to go to the polls; what would the protectionist logicians conclude from that? As a matter of fact, there have been recent elections, away from the influences which are paramount in Ohio and Pennsylvania, which do not warrant the "condemnations of free trade" which the elections in those states are said to have pronounced.
Protectionism logic never was sound or sensible.
It never can be sound or sensible because it is always either selfish or dishonest.
