DETROIT-The Detroit NAACP branch set a new record in 1956 for memberships and contributions received by a local NAACP branch during one year, it was announced here this week.
The announcement was made in a joint statement issued by Arthur L. Johnson, executive secretary of the branch, and M. Kelley Fritz, treasurer.
The Detroit branch is the largest local NAACP unit in the nation, with a total membership of 18,316 at the end of 1956.
The statement said the branch received a total income in 1956 of $93,807.60, of which $38,648.65 was apportioned to the NAACP national office for support of the national program.
The branch's income was derived from memberships and donations.
