WASHINGTON - Defense Secretary George C. Marshall has the pledge of organized labor's top leaders for wholehearted cooperation in the nation's crisis.
At a recent meeting with Marshall at the Pentagon, the United Labor Policy Committee speaking for 15 million AFL, CIO and railroad brotherhood members--lauded the defense secretary for his "constructive policies during the present emergency."
Trade union members, the labor committee declared, are "acutely conscious of the need for rapid development of both our military and industrial strength."
After a luncheon with the labor group, Marshall said that "no group has more at stake in our efforts to keep freedom strong in the world than the working men and women of this country. The survival of free labor organizations and all other democratic institutions depends on our success in checking the growth of police states and Communist plans of aggression.
"It is gratifying to me to have your pledge of cooperation in our efforts to increase the strength and effectiveness of our armed forces.
"It is my desire to keep you fully informed as to the policies we are following and to cooperate in making certain that our policies do not cause more dislocation of the civilian economy than is inescapable in the gigantic effort that is so plainly necessary.
"We shall need the understanding and support of all elements in our population in carrying thru the task successfully."
