Sanders county was named for Colonel Wilbur F. Sanders and was organized by legislative enactment February 7th, 1905. Formerly it was a part of Missoula county. The first Commissioners were W. R. Beamthan, W A Beebe and C H Rittenour, chairman.
The county is larger than some eastern states and has about 6500 people.
Geographically it is very complex with mountain ranges splitting the climate and soil conditions. It has 7 different soil variations every conceivable form of rock structure and in climate varies from the longest growing period in the state at Dixon to the heaviest rainfall in the state at Heron and portions semi-desert and driest in state. Part of the county is timber part range part irrigated part grows ample crops without rainfall. Thompson Falls is the county seat
