Business in Boosting
DURING the past year the Southern Pacific Railroad has done a lot of legitimate boosting for Nevada. There is plenty of reason in this move. The railroad is now paying more taxes than at any time in its history. If population can be found for Nevada, the tax rate is of necessity reduced. Every acre of land that is reclaimed is that much burden off the corporation and on the taxpayers. It is legitimate in every sense.
The railroad is also the heaviest land holder in this State. Nearly a million acres is accredited to the concern. Could this land or a portion of it be populated, be turned to usefulness and people occupy the same, the road would reap a vast and lasting benefit in a business proposition.
The work that the corporation is undertaking is praise worthy in every particular. By leasing lands, by colonizing them and by making Nevada attractive to the eastern people who must seek shelter in the west, the road is paving a way that ultimately means a larger population and great reclamation for this State. The road is acting on the plan of any large landlord. It is putting its lands in shape to sell. In this connection the corporation needs the assistance of every citizen who has the future of the State at heart. The boost being given Nevada by the advertising needs the approval of every commercial club or colonization agency within the border lines. It is the best material ever printed, is receiving a generous distribution and the State press is endeavoring to help it in this instance. It sounds like a campaign greater Nevada with the big interests pulling to make it all come true.
