Among the changes which are likely to take place in the Officers of our general Government, surely there is none which we have greater cause to lament, than the resignation of the Secretary of War.
When we recollect the services which he has rendered his country, whether in a military or political view, his merits demand our warmest approbation and praise. The early and decided part which he took at the commencement of our late revolution, when many of the mushroom patriots of to-day stepped behind the scene. The important services which he afterwards rendered to the cause of liberty, by his activity, zeal, and perseverance, which were so conspicuous on every occasion, have left a deep impression on the mind of every friend to America.
But his military character does not constitute the whole of his eulogium. When we view him in his political capacity, and in the walks of private life, we there find the same integrity, zeal, candor, and good sense, blended in the general tenor of his public and private conduct. The late important victory of our Western Army proves, beyond contradiction, the wisdom of those measures devised by the Secretary of War preparatory to that event.
That another may be found who will execute the important duties of his office with the same candour and integrity, is the sincere wish of a
