Full Text

It seems that the Union forces reported to have proceeded on Sunday last to within ten or twelve miles of Richmond have returned. They were sent out by Gen. Butler under command of Gen. Wistar, with the object of making a sudden dash on the city, and releasing the Union prisoners there. The Confederates however, it is alleged, had been informed of the movement by a deserter and obstructed the ford at Bottom's Bridge, by felling trees, rendering it impossible to cross. This induced the return of the expedition. It is stated that there was but a small force in or near Richmond, as Lee's army was held upon the Rapidan by the demonstration of Gen. Sedgwick on Saturday.
