Board For Home Demonstration And 4-H Club Workers When Finances Permit
At its regular May meeting Monday, the 11th, the Clarke County Board of Supervisors, voted to protest the removal of trains 27 and 28 by the Norfolk and Western Railroad Company, delegated Mr. Price the Board member to appear before the State Corporation Commission in Richmond on Tuesday the 12th, entered into an agreement with the County School Board to provide a joint purchasing agent to purchase the year's supply of coal for the schools and the county's public buildings, and transacted the usual routine business.
Miss Belle Burks, of the Co-operative Extension Work in Agriculture and Home Economics, the Virginia Polytechnic Institute co-operating with the U. S. Department of Agriculture appeared before the board in behalf of a full time worker for Clarke County in Home Demonstration and 4-H Club work. The Extension Service has had a worker in the two counties of Clarke and Frederick for several months at no expense to the counties. Miss Burks told of the progress made in her work here and several teachers and community leaders testified to the value and importance of the work.
The service is given under the fifty-fifty plan. The county's appropriation is matched by Federal funds. Clarke being a small county is asked for the minimum amount, $750.00. It was explained that in this case more than half of the expense would come from the Federal Government. The Board was unanimously in favor of the work, but considered that it would not be wise to make the appropriation at this time, and voted to defer the matter.
