Mr. ADAMS.—It seems that Mr. J. Q. Adams has been altogether misunderstood in the design of his remarks on the French Question a few days ago; and he took occasion on Saturday in regard to the reflections which some gentlemen have supposed he intended to cast upon the Senate, for its course in this matter, to make a full and unequivocal disclaimer. So far from it, he was about to applaud and commend their course, and to suggest the same for the action of the House, when his remarks were arrested by a misapprehension of the Speaker. His assurance that there will be nothing done by the House of Representatives or the Senate, to lead to war with France, will be received with satisfaction by this and other mercantile communities, which certainly were alarmed by the language imputed to him.—Bos.
