Full Text

The regrets expressed in a recent letter of Chief Justice Chase that he was not able to be present at the decoration of rebel graves, in South Carolina, indicate either a poor conception of logic, or a decided intention to pander to the Southern principles. The decoration of the graves is not a tribute to Bravery; if it were, then, undoubtedly, the rebel graves should be strewn with flowers. It is a tribute to Patriotism; and consequently those who fought to destroy the country, and sever its bonds, do not claim the ceremony. They are dead, deluded, erring; tear may drop upon the sod above them, but the chaplets of laurel and wreaths of flowers belong only to the patriot's resting place.

Chief Justice Chase expressed regret in a recent letter for not attending the decoration of rebel graves in South Carolina, seen as either illogical or pandering to Southern principles. The decoration is argued to be a tribute to patriotism, not bravery, so unfit for rebels who fought to destroy the Union; they are described as dead, deluded, erring, deserving tears but not flowers or laurels, which belong to patriots.
