WASHINGTON.
THURSDAY, MARCH 23.
THE EXPEDITION TO ORLEANS.
The British accounts, copied to-day, are calculated to give us a higher estimate of the British Expedition against New Orleans, than we before possessed. The numbers of the British forces may be fairly estimated to be underrated in the same proportion as they have over-rated ours; and the perfect confidence of ultimate success in the object of the expedition, must greatly enhance the effect at home of the disaster which the British arms have there sustained. The British accounts of the final affair are anxiously expected. If general anticipation on all hands be realized, the report of the dreadful battle of the 8th will produce such a percussion in England, as will make the prominent members of the present ministry tremble in their seats. It will be considered as a second edition of the famous Walcheren Expedition, with disastrous and mortifying embellishments.
