John A. Ellsler to Become an Inmate
of the Forest Home.
Cleveland, O., Sept. 10.-According to authentic advices received by friends in Cleveland John A. Ellsler, the father of the renowned Effie, and himself an old-time actor of no mean order, has applied for admittance to the home for aged actors in Holmesburg, Pa.
Ellsler is the father of Cleveland drama. In the early fifties he came here and started a theater on Frankfort street, from which house he went to the Academy of Music, on Bank street, where he ran one of those exceptionally fine old stock companies, taking principal roles himself. In 1875 he opened the Euclid Avenue Opera House, in which he sunk all his money, though it is now a success. From that on he never prospered. He tried the Academy again and the Lyceum, but did not succeed, and afterwards joined Effie, with whom he had previously quarreled on account of her marriage with Frank Weston. His other daughter, Annie, is a New York actress, and her mother, also an old-time actress, lives with her. Two sons, John and Will., are also in the business.
