PHILADELPHIA, August 15. The French brig La Paix, which arrived at the Lazaretto the 8th July last, on her way to this city, soon after dropped down to Marcus Hook, a village containing about 20 houses, off the public road, and of course free from the scrutinizing eye of the traveller. Why she went there, those who gave the orders best know the rest of the world are left to guess. There she received a complete overhaul and repair with new masts and rigging from stem to stern; and we are told that our collector, or some person under him, received orders from headquarters, that the brig La Paix should be "liberally supplied!" In consequence of this order, we are told, that her shallop was daily and nightly transporting articles from this city for her accommodation, and the accommodation of her patrons in Guadaloupe." Among the articles so transported by permission. "according to law," were 5 tons of cordage, 150 barrels of flour, 100 do. of salt provisions, 6 pipes wine, pipes brandy, with a long string of etceteras. Whether the permitted articles loaded her or not we cannot pretend to say; be it as it may (with permission or without permission) we are told by a person who saw her going down, after her departure from Marcus Hook on Friday last, that she was as deep as she could swim—so we go—all for our good allies! We are also told, one of the Jeff S, alias our ships of the line (alias gun boats) accompanied her down, no doubt to pass her by the three Jeffs or ships of the line and Delaware cutter, now cruising in our bay, as it is, no doubt, improper to trust too many people with secrets.
