"The new French Minister has arrived, and poor Genet is displaced. Should he return to France, he will, from the resentments of the present prevailing party, be in eminent danger of the guillotine. My feelings are shocked, on hearing of the numerous sacrifices, continually made in that ill fated country. Our political hemisphere is clouded—our barque is assailed, and it is on the margin of a whirlpool; every possible exertion is made to involve us in war; we are pressed most unreasonably. The depredations on our commerce are very provoking, nor can we guess where they will end. Recent communications have been received from our ministers at the courts of London and Madrid; they give us but little ground to hope we have many friends in the administration of either of those countries—I wish America was more detached than she is, from the politics of Europe."
