Full Text

It should astonish the reader, could he examine the records of our bordering settlements, and mark the progress of improvement and civilization which has taken place since the declaration of independence. What may yet be expected at no distant period, may easily be imagined from what has been witnessed within the last twenty years. On the 9th of December, 1799, William H. Harrison presented his credentials as a delegate from the Northwestern Territory. That "territory" is now divided into the states of Ohio, Illinois, and Indiana, and the territory of Michigan, and there is a vast tract of land north west or north of those states, out of which other states will be formed in a few years and the present population of the district represented by Mr. Harrison as a country about one million, and sends eight members and one delegate to the House of Representatives of the U. States.—N. Y. Eve. Post.
