"As there were very hard times this winter here, we left Red-stone the 2d day of March, as the river then opened; we got about thirty miles down the river, it was frozen across, and there we lay 15 days in ice, we were almost perished; after we left Pittsburgh, we came to Limestone, in four days, in going down the river we run on the point of an island, in the night, close upon the Indian shore, but nothing was hurt. I and two more men went out of the boat next morning, and shoved her off with ease: the Indians were very troublesome, they killed and robbed all they came across. There were Mr. Rytcout, Mr. Provinse, Mr. Ferguson, and Mr. Black, who went with us from Limestone to the Falls, and two more boats in company with them; unluckily they were taken by the Indians and killed at the Miami. Coming to Lexington we lay at John Keyer's, and the Indians stole four horses from the inhabitants within half a mile from this place; there were two families killed close by, the neighbours pursued and overtook them, killed 3 out of 5; a company of men went out after them from Lexington, and the farmers about, subscribed 50 dollars or a Scalp; we expect they will fly from this in a short time."
