(VIA BALTIMORE.)
London, Oct 3.
Major Downman, with two companies of the artillery, is embarking at Plymouth, with some other reinforcements, for lord Wellington's army.
The hon. gen. Colville has sailed with the Gordon Highlanders, to join lord Wellington's army.
Three French Generals, about 100 officers, and many privates, French prisoners, have been brought from Cadiz to Portsmouth, which make the number of French prisoners at that place amount to nearly 20,000 men.
Two hundred men of the 8th Royal Veteran battalion have embarked to reinforce the garrison of Heligoland.
The 2d battalion 52d, sir John Moore's favorite regiment, being now 700 effective men, expect soon to go on service.
A letter from Lisbon, dated Sept 15, says,
"The news of the fall of Almeida begins now to be somewhat less thought of, but it had a great effect on the Portuguese in general. The 83d regiment marched a few days ago for the army: the 7th Cameronians are now going. Our army has retreated a little; the head quarters are now at Gouvea; marshal Beresford is at Moimenta de Serra; our cavalry under gen. Cotton, are still at Celerico. The country from whence our army is removed is deserted by the inhabitants. From Spain the accounts continue to be very favorable; there are very formidable bodies of Spaniards all over the kingdom. Some Portuguese cavalry have been sent to Badajoz, and are now united under the Spanish army to Romana."
